An order’s total is calculated in four steps:

  1. The base price of each sub-product offering
  2. Sub-product offering active discounts applied
  3. Order-wide discounts applied
  4. Taxes applied

Sub-product offering discount calculation

Sub-product offering discounts that are set up as “dollars off” will simply deduct this amount from the base price of the sub-product offering.

Sub-product offering discounts that are set up as “percent off” will sum up the all sub-product offering discount percentages and then apply them to the base price. These discounts will always apply the percent to the original base price, not the base price after “dollars off” discounts.

Both types of sub-product offering discounts will apply to all people added to a particular sub-product offering. For example, if a customer checks a box for a $10 off discount, and has two people on that sub-product offering, $20 will be discounted from their order.

Order discount calculation

Order discounts apply to a customer’s entire order but are applied on a pro-rated basis to each sub-product offering. For example, if there is a $30 order discount applicable, and a customer’s order has a sub-product offering for $100 and another for $200, the first SKU would see an order discount of $10, and the second, an order discount of $20.

Order discounts that are set up as “dollars off” will simply deduct the pro-rated amount from the base price of the sub-product offering after all sub-product offering discounts have been applied.

Order discounts that are set up as “percent off” will sum up the all order discount percentages and then apply them to the base price after sub-product offering discounts. These discounts will always apply the percent to the original base price after sub-product offering discounts, not the base price after “dollars off” order discounts.

Note that order discounts do not necessarily carry over from waitlisted orders. Order discounts are applied only if they apply to the order being created, at the time it is being created.

For example, if your storefront has a discount of 10% for orders with 2 or more items, and your customer's original order had two purchases and one waitlisted purchase, the original order would qualify for the discount. However, if the customer's third waitlisted purchase was later charged for, that purchase would not qualify for the order discount (because it has less than 2 items).

Taxes

Taxes are applied last as an additional percentage to each sub-product offering price (after sub-product offering discounts and order discounts). Any product that is set to be non-taxable will not have tax added to it.

Your customers’ receipts will show any discounts and taxes that were applied to each sub-product offering. If you have any questions about how an order total is calculated, please contact us.
